Instead, we inherited it. Every course, every template, every “brand strategy” framework someone created and told us to follow, handing down the same script without ever mentioning where it originated. You can’t interrogate a pattern you don’t even know you’ve taken on. actually comes from

First things first…Let’s talk about the very old origins of the concept “to brand”. Brand comes from the Old Norse brandr. It meant to burn. A piece of burning wood, nothing more.

By late Middle English, it transformed into a verb: to mark something permanently with a hot iron.

By the seventeenth century, branding meant exactly what it still technically means: A permanent mark of ownership.

The practice is older than the word by thousands of years… Egyptian funerary art depicts branded cattle four thousand years ago, and the same hot iron used on livestock was used on enslaved people, by Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and later by colonizers across the Americas. Same iron, same purpose: mark a living being as property, whether that being was an animal or a person.

The word didn’t stay in the past. For most of history, buying something meant buying from someone you actually knew…whether it was your baker, your blacksmith, someone whose word you could vouch for in person. As trade outgrew that, strangers started buying from strangers, and trust could no longer be earned face to face. It had to be manufactured some other way. So the branding iron got a new job. The same mark that had been used for centuries to burn ownership onto cattle and people got repurposed onto goods, to signal to a stranger which product could be trusted based on who owned it, without that stranger ever needing to know who made it (or how it was made!).

Quaker Oats trademarked its name in 1877, one of the first packaged goods to do so. Coca-Cola followed in 1886. This was the beginning of the transformation of branding from the iron to the logo.

Here’s how that actually built trust. A name on a box, seen the same way every time, in every store, started doing the job a neighbor’s word used to do. Buy the same name twice, get the same thing twice, and the name itself starts to feel reliable, not because it’s proven anything, but because repetition reads as consistency, and consistency reads as trustworthy. That’s the trick underneath the whole practice: you didn’t need to know who made the oats. You just needed to recognize the name and remember that it hadn’t let you down in the past. The name became a stand-in for the relationship, and once enough strangers bought into that stand-in, the name alone could carry the weight a real relationship used to carry.

Functionally, still the same claim as the iron: this good is ours, distinguishable from every other good that looks just like it, and you should trust our goods because of the name they’re branded with. Just stamped on a label now instead of burned into skin.

Then in 1997, Tom Peters told Fast Company readers we were all “CEOs of our own companies,” and that our job now was to become “head marketer for the brand called You.” The mark that once claimed ownership over a body, then a product, got handed directly to us, to use on our own identity, willingly, as a career move.

That’s the story of branding. Ownership, over a body, then a good, then a self.

Modern branding has softened the language considerably. We talk about things like brand differentiation and positioning and voice. But make no mistake… the structural root held: claim something, mark it, make the mark visible, repeat. If the whole discipline was built to make ownership visible rather than care or authenticity visible, it starts to make sense why performative branding comes so much more naturally than building something meaningful and real.

(I go deeper on the full sourced history and timeline in the original piece on my site, <a up around our modern understanding of branding. What’s important to understand is that none of these are new words. They’re connected to the same root, sending the same instructions up through every branch, no matter how far from the trunk the branch is.

Target audience. Aim-language, borrowed from hunting, applied to actual people as though the goal is to hit something instead of relate to someone.

Brand loyalty. Loyalty is a word for allegiance, historically owed to those positioned above us. Applied to a brand, it asks for faithfulness, flowing one direction, without much obligation flowing back.

Conversion. Borrowed from religious concepts, changing what someone fundamentally believes. If you’ve spent time in the values-led business space, you’ve probably lived inside at least one of these…

✱ A webpage that claims one thing while the pricing, the actual service, or the day-to-day practice signals something else entirely.

✱ The “sliding scale available” that’s never actually been offered to anyone who asked.

✱ The “community over competition” language on a site that still upholds capitalistic competitiveness behind the scenes.

✱ The emphasis on compassion and accessibility within an offer’s description that still runs on a countdown timer and a fake-scarcity launch calendar.

✱ A public statement posted because everyone else is commenting on the same moment, before there’s any accountability, implementation, or practice behind it to back it up.

✱ The Black History Month post, the Pride graphic, the Indigenous Peoples’ Day land acknowledgment, the Earth Day sustainability reshare… all posted just once a year, on the day everyone else posts it, with nothing behind it the other eleven months. No redistribution. No actual relationship with the people or cause named in the caption.

✱ A rebrand celebrated as the change itself, while nothing about how the business actually operates is any different. This often looks like a new manifesto about rest, anti-grind culture, ethical practice. And underneath it: rest, except the founder hasn’t taken a full day off in six months. Anti-grind culture, except the launch calendar still runs on urgency and countdown timers. Ethical practice, except the founder still practices super manipulative marketing habits. The words changed. The business underneath didn’t.

That’s performative branding in one sentence: starting with ownership and a mark to reflect it, then performing whatever it wants to express, without any care for what’s actually true underneath.

Why this is worth the deprogramming

I take this approach to branding (ecological, nature-based, rooted in relationship + truth) because performance has a cost.

Part of that cost lands on other people. Every time a claim doesn’t hold up against what someone actually experiences, whether that’s a client, a customer, a follower, or a community member… it teaches them to trust a little less. Not just you, but the next person who makes a similar claim in good faith. That erosion is cumulative. It’s part of why people are exhausted by branding before they’ve even developed a relationship to a business or person/s behind it.

The part of the cost that gets talked about far less is what performance does to the person or organization doing it. Upholding a brand that doesn’t match your practice takes energy, and it’s draining: the vigilance of managing the gap, the exhaustion of performing something instead of just embodying it. That’s not sustainable. Burnout isn’t only about doing too much. It’s also what happens when you’re spending real energy holding up a claim that isn’t structurally supported by anything underneath it. The losses that come from approaching branding in this way are intense…from losing connections to colleagues or dedicated clients to having much bigger consequences land in your lap. Is it really worth it?

This is why I don’t think of this as personal-development work, and I don’t think it’s only relevant to individuals building a “personal brand.” It applies the same way to a small business, a practitioner, a movement, an organization, anything or anyone trying to be recognized for what it actually is instead of what it’s claiming to be.

Deprogramming from the roots of branding isn’t a nice-to-have for people who care about ethics or integrity. It’s structural change-making. An organization that reimagines its relationship to branding this way isn’t just treating the people it reaches with more care. It’s also freeing up the energy that was going into performance and putting it back into the actual work. Not to mention, it’s helping to preserve its humanity.

The impact gets bigger when the energy isn’t split between doing the work and performing that you’re doing it. This is good for people. It’s also just good practice for the work itself and for what that work is actually intended to do in the world.

The origin doesn’t have to be the destiny

Here’s the part that matters more than the history lesson…

Just because the word was built for ownership doesn’t mean we’re stuck using or relating to it that way. We can replace the word. Or we can rewrite the entire script of what branding means to us in this present moment.

Brandr meant fire before it meant ownership. And fire does more than clear space… it reveals what’s underneath. Some seeds in a forest are sealed shut and only crack open in the heat of a burn (like Sequioas). They’ve been there the whole time, waiting for the right environment to support their true nature in being able to come forward. A controlled burn clears away everything performative, and in doing that, it doesn’t just make room for something new. It exposes what was already there, dormant, waiting for the conditions to finally let it grow. That’s the reclaiming I’m after. Not a rebrand, which just layers something new on top again. A controlled burn: clearing what’s performative so what was always true underneath- the actual relationship, the actual practice, the true self finally has both the exposure and the space to thrive.

So what do we call it instead, if not “brand”? And if the word itself is rotten at the root, what’s the alternative, in practice, not just in vocabulary?

That’s Part 2. Stay tuned. :)

Next in the series: A Field Guide for Nature-Based Branding, the method I use to help people find what’s already true instead of inventing something new to perform.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Hi! It’s the coach you have been working with. The freelance designer you swap out for an AI prompt because it’s free and it’s quick. The specialist you don’t work with because you figure you can DIY it yourself instead. It’s the local shop you trade for same-day shipping.

The corporation you pay instead is already hoarding more wealth and power than any of us can comprehend, and it built that fortune by extracting from the people and the planet that keeps it running. Every dollar we hand it is a dollar that never makes it to the person, the community, or the ecosystem that actually needs it.

Here’s what actually happens when a dollar moves. Spend $100 at a local business and roughly $68 of it stays in your local economy, paid out as wages to people who live in your zip code. Spend it at a corporate chain, and most of that money is gone by the end of the day, routed to a shareholder or a headquarters you’ll never set foot in. Independent businesses recirculate close to half of every dollar they take in. Chains recirculate a fraction of that.

Every dollar spent locally generates three to seven dollars of additional economic activity in the surrounding community.

And yet... There is a trap that corporations often count on.

Two things can happen when a big corp or platform starts occupying local areas (or digital spaces!) and undercuts prices.

One: healthy competition holds. Prices stay reasonable because someone is still keeping the corporation in check. Unfortunately, this type of situation is pretty sparse nowadays as we continue to see monopolies take over.

Two, and this is the one we’re actually living in: the corporation prices the small business out completely. It can eat a loss on one product line for years. Your local store or small online business most likely cannot. So it closes. And once there’s no competition left, prices climb right up, except now there’s no one else to take your money. Basically, we are forced to spend our money at these big corporations that caused all the smaller options to close.

Small business bankruptcies were up 67 percent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the year before. An estimated 15,000 stores are projected to close this year, more than double last year’s total. More than a quarter of small business owners report being priced out by predatory pricing, and over a third say platforms are burying them under their own products instead. Two-thirds of them don’t believe anyone in the government is going to stop it. They are likely right, as our US government benefits financially from this cycle.

Big corporations don’t reinvest in the places they occupy. They extract from them. Small businesses do the opposite: local wages, local suppliers, the little league sponsorship, the lights that stay on downtown. When you starve the little guy to save a few dollars, you’re not actually saving much. In reality, you’re funding the exact system that’s going to charge you more the second it’s the only option left.

Consider what’s happening with our streaming services as well as online platforms. When I grew up, it was normal for a household to have cable TV. You’d choose the package of channels you wanted included in your monthly bill; some would get the really cool extra channels like HBO, but most families I knew had just the basic channel options. There weren’t singular applications you had to subscribe to like we see today. Heck, I recall when Netflix was simply a DVD service you got in the mail. Nowadays, you have to get a subscription for everything individually. We are even seeing this with our social media apps. You have to pay in order to access the same things that we got for free just a few years ago. The more these big companies dominate markets, the more power they have over us to take away our options while continually raising the costs. And this doesn’t stop here. We are seeing it across the board, from our utility bills and overall cost of living to our grocery costs and gas prices.

It’s a common misconception that supporting small businesses costs more. The reality is, turning to big corporations over small, indie brands costs us more than we even realize in the long run.

An economy where an entire population can’t afford anything doesn’t hold. It breaks, one way or another. That’s not alarmism. That’s just what happens when you squeeze something long enough.

You don’t need a movement to start closing this gap. Every purchase is a vote for which economy still exists in ten years: the one that hoards, or the one that circulates.

Where to Start This August

<picture></picture>

Audit one recurring subscription this week. We live inside a system that worships money above people, above land, above life itself. The people at the top didn’t get there by accident. They got there by taking more than any one person or company should ever hold, and they intend to keep taking, because the whole structure depends on the rest of us not looking too closely at how it all actually functions.

Seeing that clearly isn’t pessimism. It’s the first act of resistance. You cannot dismantle what you refuse to name.

Think of it this way: Many who operate their own indie business quite literally depend on folks choosing these forms of resistance at this moment in time. Just consider the stats I shared earlier on. If we want to experience a future that isn’t dominated by a few corporations setting all the standards and pricing, while simultaneously causing small businesses to completely disappear, we need to start choosing differently.

It’s about waking up to how deliberately this system was built, and how deliberately we have to choose something different now. Awareness isn’t the finish line; it’s the starting point. Every choice after it- where you spend, what you buy into, who you trust with your time and your money- is either feeding the machine or feeding the roots of community support. That's the question the whole list was really asking: what deserves to be reclaimed, and what's actually holding us together.

Not Our Fault, Still Our Responsibility

<picture></picture>

Let’s be real: we did not create this mess. I’m exhausted. I’m burned out. I’m putting so much in and getting so little back.”

And yet, not much changes. 😑

I’ve been working for myself for well over a decade now. I’ve worked in and around marketing for most of that time… with brands, with creatives, with solopreneurs, with organizations trying to figure out how to get their gifts and ideas in front of the people they were made for without selling their souls. And the single most baffling thing I witness, consistently, is this: the sheer number of people spending enormous amounts of time, energy, and creative capacity on marketing they cannot stand (and cannot seem to imagine doing differently).

It’s like thinking outside of social media marketing hasn’t fully occurred to them as a possibility.

I don’t say that to be dismissive or judgmental. I say it because I’ve spent a long time trying to understand why this keeps happening… and I think I have a pretty good sense of it now.

Part of it is a seeing problem. When people look for models of how to market a business, they look at what’s most visible. And what’s most visible is the social media presence of large corporations and big brands; ones with dedicated marketing teams, significant budgets, and entire departments whose job is to produce content that the founder probably never personally touches. Those brands aren’t posting because it’s the most effective use of their marketing energy. They’re posting because they can afford to, because it’s expected at their scale, and because it serves an awareness function that large brands with large ad budgets lean into.

We are not those brands. We most likely do not have the same team sizes or the same budgets. And more importantly, we don’t have the same relationship to our work, our clients, and our communities. Comparing ourselves to them and then trying to replicate their approach is a recipe for misalignment from the start.

But the other part (and this is the part I find myself pretty passionate about) is an imagination problem. Or more precisely: a lack of understanding that has closed the imagination down.

Most people I encounter have a very narrow picture of what marketing actually is. It has been so thoroughly collapsed into social media in the public consciousness that the entire rest of the landscape (which is vast and full of approaches that fit radically different kinds of people) has become essentially invisible. So people keep pouring themselves into something that depletes them, not because they’ve tried everything else and this is the best option, but because they genuinely don’t know the other options exist - or how to implement them.

This kind of blows my mind. Marketing that you dread doing is a direct path to burnout, depletion, and misalignment… and misalignment shows up in your results. When you’re forcing yourself into a framework that’s at odds with how you think, how you build trust, and how your energy actually moves, the work shows it. The people you’re trying to reach feel it.

After more than a decade in this world, I’ve gotten pretty clear on what my own marketing style looks and feels like. I’ve also gotten clear that there’s no single right answer… the best marketing any of us can do is the kind that comes from our actual nature, not someone else’s playbook. That’s become one of the things I’m most passionate about helping people find.

This piece is an attempt to give you a framework for doing exactly that.

First up: The actual landscape of Marketing

Before we get into the framework, I want to lay out what marketing can be when you zoom out far enough to see all of it. Notice how many of these you’ve probably never seriously considered for yourself.

Marketing is one of the oldest human activities there is. Before Instagram, before the internet, before printing presses… it was word of mouth, demonstration, reputation, presence, relationship. These are all forms of marketing. What’s happened is that one narrow set of practices has become so dominant in our visual landscape that we’ve stopped seeing everything else.

The many types of marketing:

Content marketing: writing, podcasting, video, newsletters. Creating things people find valuable enough to seek out, return to, and share. The long game. Builds trust and authority over time.

SEO and search discoverability: making sure that when someone is already looking for what you do, they can find you.

Email marketing: the most direct line you have to the people who’ve said they want to hear from you. You own it. No algorithm decides whether or not your message is worthy of showing to others.

Referral and word of mouth: the oldest marketing there is, and still among the most powerful. Underrated in the online business world because it doesn’t come with receiving of dopamine hits we gain via likes, comments, and shares. And yet, this is often the primary source of the most aligned clients.

Community building: creating spaces, gatherings, or conditions where the people who share your values can find each other, and find you.

Collaboration and co-creation: making things with other people, building in public with peers, cross-pollinating through genuine creative exchange rather than forced audience swaps.

Newsletter or Substack publishing: a specific and distinct practice from general email marketing. A place where you build a body of work in public over time, develop a relationship with a recurring readership, and own the list. The long-form, recurring publication as a creative and marketing home.

Speaking, teaching, and embodied presence: being in rooms, physical or virtual, where the people you want to reach already gather. Presence as the message.

IRL and local visibility: showing up in your actual geographic community in ways that are recognizable and relationship-building over time. More powerful than most people realize until they experience it directly.

Curation marketing: gathering, filtering, and pointing toward what matters in your field or ecosystem. A curated newsletter, a roundup, a reading list, a recommendations practice. For some, this is more natural and more sustainable than producing original content.

Social media: yes, this too. One option among many. Useful for discovery and connection. Genuinely unsustainable as the only approach. Not inherently better than anything listed above.

Podcast marketing: audio as a primary channel, whether you’re hosting your own show, guesting on others’, or both. Voice and conversation as the medium of trust-building. Distinct from written content in what it can do - presence, nuance, and real-time thinking come through differently here.

The question is never: which of these is the right one?

The question is: which of these actually fits the way you work, the way your energy moves, the way you build trust, the specific role you play in the ecosystem around you?

That’s where things get interesting.

Discovering your natural approach to marketing

I developed a methodology I call the Ecological Roles of Care: a framework for naming the different essential roles that already exist in living systems, and that already show up in how people move through their communities and their work.

It grew out of something I kept noticing: the people who were most depleted in their businesses weren’t struggling because they lacked skill, vision, or commitment. They were struggling because they were trying to hold roles that didn’t belong to them. Working so hard to show up in ways they’d been told visibility required that they’d completely lost touch with the specific way their own gifts want to move through them and into the world.

This framework I’ve developed names nine distinct roles. And when I started mapping those roles in relation to marketing (asking what each role’s natural way of moving suggests about how a person should be building visibility, reaching people, sustaining a practice), the answers were so specific and so different from each other that it changed how I work with clients.

Read through the descriptions below and notice what lands. What makes you exhale? What makes you think, oh, that’s me, not because it sounds aspirational, but because it sounds familiar.

<a class="image-link image2 This space runs on something older, and more people + planet focused. Reciprocity. Seasonal rhythm. The wisdom of nature-based systems that have been tending themselves for centuries. You’ll find essays, field guides, and reflections that draw from that different well… on creativity as resistance, ecology as framework, and care as the metric that matters most.

Follow along on Substack for more, or visit our website to learn about working together.

This space functions best when it’s in conversation with what you’re actually navigating. If there’s a question you keep returning to, a tension in your creative work or business you haven’t found the right guidance for, a topic you wish someone would write about honestly, this is where you can bring it!

Your submissions shape the Field Notes, essays, and Creative Camp Radio episodes that come out of the studio.

Submit a question or topic!

This work grows through reciprocity. In a forest, nutrients move in circles; nothing is extracted without giving back. A paid subscription is how you return something to the soil. In return: full access to every Field Note, essay, and field guide, plus the occasional members-only dispatch from deep in the studio woods.
