In actuality, though, this month has been the continuation of something I started about two years ago&#8230; a curiosity to fully understand how search works and how to make it work for us.</p><p>I haven&#8217;t shared much with ya&#8217;ll about what&#8217;s been going on behind the scenes within DoGoodBiz Studio lately, but I&#8217;ve had a lot of requests to share what we&#8217;ve been doing to help divest dependency from social media for business. For the past five months, I&#8217;ve made SEO the forefront of my marketing efforts. In practice, that&#8217;s looked like:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Keyword research</strong>: learning what people are actually seeking, and sitting with the data of what they&#8217;re typing into a search bar when they&#8217;re frustrated, hopeful, or looking for something they can&#8217;t quite name yet. This gives you a completely different relationship with your niche than any amount of social media scrolling ever could, and it made everything else on this list significantly easier. (Really getting to know the people you want to bring into your ecosystem is one of the most important foundations of digital marketing because without it, the rest becomes guesswork.)</p></li><li><p><strong>Rewriting and restyling service pages</strong> <em>(on-page SEO)</em> to create a more intentional and clear experience for visitors, in language real people actually search for. This process also sharpened my skills around webpage layouts and copywriting; work we happen to do for studio clients too, so it&#8217;s been exciting to bring genuinely upleveled skills to that.</p></li><li><p><strong>Cleaning up technical infrastructure</strong> <em>(technical SEO)</em>: meta descriptions, site structure, page speed. A big goal has been increasing time spent on our site, which sent me into a backlinking strategy, reorganizing blog content for searchability, making the site properly crawlable, learning schema markup, and building off-page authority. More rabbit holes than I expected, more satisfying than I anticipated.</p></li><li><p><strong>Publishing content regularly and with intention</strong>: something more people with websites need to hear: having a site isn&#8217;t set-it-and-forget-it. What I love about this part is that it&#8217;s a puzzle. You have to figure out your own unique approach to content that makes you discoverable <em>and</em> builds genuine trust with the people who land there.</p></li></ul><p>This is the kind of work that touches every corner of your site and keeps asking the same question in a dozen different ways: <em>Is this findable? Is this clear? Does this say what we do and who we do it for?</em></p><p>I&#8217;ve learned so much doing all of this, and I&#8217;ll be sharing more of the how-to in future writing, so stay tuned. But here&#8217;s what I want to name right now: there are no metrics that reward you in real time for this kind of work. No dopamine hit when you log in, no comments rolling in within the hour. You&#8217;re basically gardening in the dark&#8230; aerating soil, pulling weeds, trusting that the roots you&#8217;re tending now will grow something worth having later.</p><p>And then you start to see the work pay off, and it&#8217;s genuinely exciting! Organic impressions climbing. Traffic finding us through searches that made me actually say <em>yes, that&#8217;s exactly who we&#8217;re for.</em> It&#8217;s compounding in a sustainable way that a year of social media content never did.</p><p>Sitting with this work over the past several months, I kept returning to the same thought: <em>this is how I want to spend my creative energy.</em> Not on a content treadmill. Not performing for an algorithm that wants more frequency, more polish, more output in exchange for reach that keeps shrinking anyway. But here, in my own digital space, building something that belongs to us and gets stronger over time.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png" width="1274" height="158" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:158,&quot;width&quot;:1274,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:358750,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://dogoodbiz.substack.com/i/188826378?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!3Ez9!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8f10525d-d777-4878-8577-85a7e39964a4_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>I want to be honest about how this actually happened, because it wasn&#8217;t a clean break.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t leave social media in one bold, principled moment. I divested from it gradually, over several years, slowly, then decisively, shifting where I put my energy. There were periods of posting less, then barely, then experimenting with other channels, then realizing that every time I came back to social media, it felt like returning to something that no longer fit. Over the last year, our studio made it official: social media is simply not on our marketing priority list.</p><p>DoGoodBiz Studio doesn&#8217;t use Instagram as a business tool. We&#8217;re not on TikTok. We don&#8217;t have an active LinkedIn presence. We don&#8217;t have a YouTube channel. And we&#8217;ve arrived at this through years of paying attention to what was actually working and being willing to let go of what wasn&#8217;t.</p><p>I say this because I keep seeing the same thing surface in communities I&#8217;m part of, in DMs, in conversations with other creative business owners: <em>I&#8217;m so exhausted by social media. I want to quit, but I don&#8217;t know how. What do I do instead?</em></p><p>So this is my attempt to answer that honestly. Not with a &#8220;10-step framework&#8221;, but with what&#8217;s actually true for our studio.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png" width="1274" height="158" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:158,&quot;width&quot;:1274,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:300459,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://dogoodbiz.substack.com/i/188826378?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!g_82!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9670af55-2b8a-4160-ad71-b954724e2933_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Here&#8217;s the real picture of how we attract clients, build community, and stay visible without social media as the engine:</p><h4>We show up on 1&#8211;2 platforms we actually enjoy.</h4><p>Our Substack and Pinterest are our primary online content publishing homes. That&#8217;s it. I chose them because I genuinely love creating for these platforms&#8230; writing essays and having conversations are things I&#8217;d do anyway, and I use Pinterest constantly, so engaging it for business feels completely natural. When you create from a place of real interest rather than obligation, it can be felt by others.</p><p><strong>The rule I follow:</strong> if you&#8217;re dreading being on a platform or creating content for it, it&#8217;s probably not the right platform for you.</p><h4>We invested in our website and SEO.</h4><p>As I mentioned above, this is the work I&#8217;ve been deep in this month, and I want to name it directly because I think it gets undervalued in the creative business conversation. Your website is the one digital home you actually own. Social media platforms can change their algorithms, their rules, their entire business model&#8230; and they will, they do, they have. Your website doesn&#8217;t.</p><p>SEO isn&#8217;t magic, and it isn&#8217;t instant. But when someone searches for &#8220;ethical creative studio&#8221; or &#8220;values-aligned marketing&#8221; or &#8220;how to market my small business without social media,&#8221; we want to be findable. Over time, that findability compounds. A well-optimized page works for you in a way that an Instagram post simply doesn&#8217;t&#8230; it&#8217;s a longevity-driven approach to business, whereas social media largely rewards short-term thinking.</p><h4>We collaborate instead of broadcasting.</h4><p>Some of our most meaningful visibility has come through collaborating with other people via guest appearances on podcasts, being mentioned in newsletters by people who respect the work, partnerships with aligned businesses, and community organizations. These aren&#8217;t slimy &#8220;collab for reach&#8221; moves. They&#8217;re genuine relationships we&#8217;ve cultivated, often over years, and they have the side effect of expanding your circle in a way that feels human, not transactional.</p><p><strong>One thing about SEO that people often don&#8217;t realize:</strong> having your website linked on other websites grows your credibility and improves your searchability. One truly aligned collaboration has the ability to generate more reciprocal results than months of social media content often does for most.</p><h4>We think local and niche, not mass and viral.</h4><p>One of the biggest mindset shifts I made was releasing the idea that we needed to reach (or be for) everyone. We don&#8217;t. We need to reach the right people: impact-driven business owners, creatives who want to work differently, folks building intentional ecosystems rather than empires. Locally, this means being genuinely embedded in the communities and conversations near us. Nichely, this means being very clear in our language about who we&#8217;re for and who we&#8217;re not.</p><p>Clarity of niche does the targeting work that boosted posts and hashtag strategies used to (poorly) attempt to do on social media.</p><h4>And most importantly: we focus on relationships.</h4><p>Referrals are still how a lot of our studio clients find us&#8230; not because we even ask for them, but because we&#8217;ve built real relationships over years with collaborators, past clients, community members, and others doing genuinely great work in the world. Relationships take longer to build than a following. But they don&#8217;t evaporate when an algorithm changes, and they add a depth of value to the experience of running a business that disrupts the individualist approach we&#8217;re normally encouraged to take.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png" width="1274" height="158" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:158,&quot;width&quot;:1274,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:339584,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://dogoodbiz.substack.com/i/188826378?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!-FiG!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8397f386-5f33-4173-9d9a-a3b41cadd4fc_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>I want to be honest about the tradeoff, because I think it&#8217;s important.</p><p>Platform independence doesn&#8217;t mean you disappear from the work of visibility; it means you do that work differently. This approach is more thought-out. You don&#8217;t get the instant feedback loop of social media. It requires genuine patience and genuine investment in quality over volume.</p><p>It also requires a certain tolerance for uncertainty, especially early on. When you stop posting to Instagram, there&#8217;s a period that feels like silence. That silence can be uncomfortable. It can be triggering. It took me a bit of time to get comfortable with not being plugged into social media. I had so many habits wrapped up in my social media usage that I had to consciously work on breaking them in order to feel fine with not being active on platforms like Instagram. Now, I only post a story or something when I may feel inclined to be on the IG app&#8230; but more often than not, being active on IG is not even on my mind (how glorious that is!). </p><p>The other thing this requires is clarity about who you are, what you offer, who you&#8217;re for, and why it matters. Social media, for all its problems, creates a kind of forced momentum: you post, something happens, you post again. Without it, you have to be genuinely intentional about how you communicate your value. That&#8217;s a different form of creativity that many of us are completely disconnected from. We&#8217;ve been forced into this hyper-speed style of marketing that, let&#8217;s be honest, is not sustainable for us in the long run. </p><p>For me, shifting away from social media and into a focus on SEO and website optimization has been a really liberating experience. I feel so much more spacious throughout my days, the work I do to get our brand out there and in front of folks we want to connect with feels genuinely exciting, and I feel so much more present in the connections and relationships I&#8217;m invested in.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png" width="1274" height="158" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/d5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:158,&quot;width&quot;:1274,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:413802,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://dogoodbiz.substack.com/i/188826378?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!OpFu!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd5b5dc21-33d3-407e-b3ae-4b3123c78e22_1274x158.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>If you&#8217;re a creative business owner who is tired of performing for platforms that don&#8217;t serve you, this is your permission slip.</p><p>You don&#8217;t have to be everywhere. You don&#8217;t have to post daily. You don&#8217;t have to build an audience of thousands before you can have a sustainable business. You do have to build something with roots. Something you own, something you can tend, something that can be found by the people who are genuinely looking for what you offer.</p><p><strong>If you&#8217;re ready to start, here&#8217;s where I&#8217;d begin:</strong></p><p><strong>1. Get clear on your niche and ideal client first.</strong> Before you touch your website or think about SEO, know who you&#8217;re talking to and what they actually need. Everything else (your copy, your content strategy, your keywords) flows from this. If it&#8217;s fuzzy, the rest will be too. </p><p><strong>2. Audit your current website and SEO baseline.</strong> Look at your site with fresh eyes, or ask someone else to. Is it clear within the first few seconds what you do and who it&#8217;s for? Are your pages findable? Is the experience something you&#8217;d actually want to move through? Tools like Google Search Console (free) can show you where you&#8217;re starting from and where the gaps are.</p><p><strong>3. Choose 1&#8211;2 platforms you actually enjoy and commit to them.</strong> Not the platforms you think you <em>should</em> be on. The ones you&#8217;d show up on even if it didn&#8217;t directly benefit your business. That genuine interest is what makes content worth reading&#8230; and what makes showing up sustainable over time.</p><p>These steps won&#8217;t produce overnight results. But they will produce something better: a presence that&#8217;s discoverable, aligned, and growing in a way you can actually sustain.</p><div><hr></div><h4>Chances are, you didn&#8217;t start a business to perform for an algorithm. Build something with a longer memory than a 24-hour news feed.</h4><p>At DoGoodBiz Studio, this is exactly the kind of work we do with and for clients. Whether you&#8217;re starting from scratch or untangling a digital presence that isn&#8217;t working the way you need it to, we offer support across brand strategy and positioning, website design and optimization, SEO strategy, and sustainable marketing frameworks that don&#8217;t depend on platforms you can&#8217;t stand to log on to.
